What a Find: Digging a Victorian Medusa Horse Boss!

What an absolute screamer of a find! If you follow my regular hunts, you know it is normally all about the coins and the jewellery out here. So to pull a genuine vintage artefact out of the dark sand during an evening metal detecting session is just something completely different.

Victorian horse boss sat on a minelab manticore

I was out with the Minelab Manticore, running the 9-inch coil for that superior separation. Suddenly, this beautiful, solid two-way tone cuts right through. The VDI was locked hard between 69 and 73. Straight away, I knew it had to be a large item. To test it out, I pulled my coil right up off the grass, and even at 8 to 9 inches off the ground, it was still beeping good and loud.

When you get a signal that powerful, your heart starts racing. I honestly thought it was something much older at first because the crazy thing is, these horse bosses look so similar throughout history—even the Roman ones share a massive resemblance to this design. After doing a bit of research online, I managed to trace it down and find an identical match. Turns out it is a stunning Victorian Medusa horse boss, used to decorate heavy horse harnesses back in the day.

Seeing that legendary face and all those intricate details emerge from the dark soil is a feeling you just can't beat. It makes every single quiet hour spent wandering the fields worth it!
